Many Colors of the Tongue
Colors? You heard that right. There are many "colors" of the tongue..........none are good, except that normal pink look........but other colors do exist! We are going to look at the causes of a white tongue.
First off, white. What causes a white tongue? There are numerous things that can cause a whitish coating or white spots to develop on the tongue.
Leukoplakia-----this is a condition that causes the cells in the mouth and tongue to grow excessively. Because of this, it leads to white patches being formed inside the mouth and onto the tongue. Sounds scary right? On its own, its not dangerous. But often times this is a sign.......a precursor to cancer. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience this. Let the dentist determine what the cause is. Often times Leukoplakia can develop when the tongue has been irritated. If you use tobacco products, you may experience white patches.
Candidiasis, also known as Oral Thrush, is a yeast infection that develops inside the mouth. Sounds gross, but it also will result in white patches on the tongue and roof of the mouth that resembles cottage-cheese. In most cases, thrush is seen in infants, the elderly who wear dentures, and anyone with a weekend immune system. If you happen to be taking medications such as inhaled steroids, oral thrush may appear. Sometimes after the use of antibiotics, thrush may appear because the antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the mouth.
