We all know the basic tips for proper dental healthcare include daily flossing and two times daily brushing. Now, there is a supplement that you can add to your daily dental hygiene routine to ensure all of your bases are covered. That supplement is an oral rinse or mouthwash. There are many benefits of oral rinses that you can take into account when deciding whether not you'd like to add it to your dental hygiene routine.
One of the first benefits of oral rinses is that they contain a variety of ingredients that are helpful in battling bacteria in the mouth. One of these ingredients is called cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which is a germ fighting ingredient that's been shown to be not only safe but also very effective. Other oil runs ingredients that add to their benefits include povidone iodine and essential oils.
A study that was published in 2008 in the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry randomize 80 16-year-olds and had them use one of four mouthwashes for two weeks. They're gum tissues were examined at the start and the close of the study to determine the effect that mouthwash had, if any. In the end, the study found that those using the mouthwash with the aforementioned ingredients had significantly reduced plaque and reduced bacterial indicators of gingivitis. The fourth mouthwash that was included in the study contained an herbal extract, but while it contributed to plaque control, the improvement was hardly significant.
Overall, studies have shown that the benefits of oral rinses can reduce more plaque and reduce more signs of gingivitis when used as a supplement to twice daily brushing and daily flossing. Be sure, when using an oral rinse that you follow the instructions on the bottle and avoid swallowing it. Also, oral rinses are not recommended for young children as they are at increased risk of accidentally swallowing it. Either way, it is up to you to decide if the benefits of oral rinses contribute positively to your dental health needs.
